Natural cat food, is it really all natural?

Many people seem to be desperately looking for all natural cat food for their cats by fear of possible bad side effects of chemical additions usually found in commercial cat food.

The question of whether the cat foods being consumed are natural is definitely a false question! what matters most is the quality of the cat food! some vitamin additions for example can indeed be very good for your cat, although it is not natural! my thought is that if you are to purchase commercial (canned or dry) cat food, quality should be your main concern as there is almost no such thing as all natural cat food in the market, unless you made it in your kitchen by yourself.

One additional remark is that you are a lot more likely to find near natural wet cat food than natural dry products!

The best natural cat food you can make will be something using meat and meat byproducts, rice, cooked eggs, probably some cheese, ... etc. You can find a lot of natural cat food recipes in this blog! Once you are familiar with the basic natural ingredients that we use the sky is going to be your sole limit.

Cat food recipe: Finicky Feline Diet

Ingredients:

1 cup chopped cooked chicken
1/2 cup cooked rice
1/2 cup chopped broccoli, cooked until tender
1/4 cup chopped carrot, cooked until tender
Chicken broth

How to make it:
Mix all ingredients in a food processor or blender with enough chicken broth to hold together. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

The Chick N'Biscuits

1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/3 cup cornmeal

1 tablespoon soft margarine

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

How to build a cat tree?

Cats are very playful animals, and as you may have noticed they love to climb all kinds of surfaces but rarely find suitable places to play.

Cat trees are specially crafted materials made for cats to climb and to play with. Even though you can purchase a cat tree online, it is probably not the best cost effective option as it is not so hard to make one! you only need to have good plans to work with and some spare time.

Good plans are needed because many people have built cat trees in the past and observed how cats interacted with it and then modified the trees to optimize them with the cat behavior so that the cat likes it best. By following a plan, you benefit from the experience of other skillful builders who have already gone through the process of building a cat tree over and over.

Until recently good plans where scarce in the internet and one could hardly find anything worth working with. Luckily a cat tree maker has released now a package containing plenty of plans backed with tutorials and construction guideline.

Cat rescue

How do you rescue a cat or a kitten? this is a big question for today! on my way to my office this morning, I stumbled upon a kitten which was starving in the street under the hot sunshine!
The first rescue action that came into my mind was to bring some water for the kitten to rescue it from a sure death, so I went to see a cafe not too far, he was very helpful, but infortunately, when I poured a little water near the cat's mouth and even on it, the cat didn't care about it at all, I guess it was too late for the poor kitten to feel or see ant shed of light anymore!
So the kitten couldn't be rescued and starved in its place!
sorry if this was not a recipe! I will compensate very soon with some amazing cat treats that are to come, and I will see what meal I can prepare specifically for CAT RESCUE so that no poor animals will ever starve in the street never again, hallelujah.

what table food can cats eat?

This frequently asked question seems to be endlessly coming over and over, and I think only a good list of table foods that cats can eat will answer this question.
So here's for you a list of common table foods that you can safely share with your cat:

- Meat (of couurse :p).
- Milk (in moderate amounts).
- Pieces of bread.
- Cheese.

It is also important to know what human table food cats cannot eat, because some foods can be deadly for cats, here's a quick list:

- Alcohol.
- Chocolate.
- Bones (to some extent).
- Coffee grounds or beans
- Avocados.
- Raw eggs (Cooked eggs are not dangerous).
- Onions.
- Garlic.
- Raw fish.
- spices.

I will add more items to both lists as I go, it's difficult to list all what a cat can eat (or cannot eat), but I will complement the lists later.

Are meat analogue and in vitro meat the future of cat food?

I would be off-topic again if you assume I should exclusively be talking in this blog about homemade cat food recipes, but the importance of the subject brings me to talk about it here anyway, and if you want my oppinion, I think all what has to do with cat food should be going in this blog, and all that interests cat owners to a lesser extent.

Let's first introduce In-Vitro meat, this is laboratory grown muscle tissue or culture meat, it is animal tissue that has never been part of an actual living animal.
You can also think of it as a meat tissue without a nervous system, which means eating it does not inflict pain to any living animal.

More information on in vitro meat can be found in this wikipedia page.

Meat analogue on the other hand is not meat at all! it is made of vegetable ingredients such as soja and beans, and treated to taste and smell somewhat like true meat. Some call it mock meat, faux meat, imitation meat, or meat substitute. It is believed to be already in commercial production in a form or another and used in many products such as luncheon mixed with real meat.

We already don't know (or not sure) wether vegetable meat is good or bad for cats, what we know is that they like it, and I myself give it to them regularly, it gives them at least some vitamins added to a good amount of fat, but we don't know how they actually process this food.

As for in-vitro meat, I am just waiting for it to arrive to feed it to my cats and even to eat it myself, it is real meat, no catch, it a considerable advace of science that we need to take and use, it is not even genetically modified (at least for now), there are no ethical problems associated to it, and even if humans are culturally not ready for it yet, I can certify it is the future of cat food, in some years when it will be more available, I hope to be the first out there to post an in-vitro meat based homemade cat food recipe.

make your own beef and rice cat food

As you know, your cats may not eat rice if fed alone to them, and beef is expensive in most countries, and it is not practical to feed your cat exclusively with raw or cooked beef meat.
Furthermore, beef alone may not be sufficient to proprerly nourish your cat (too low in carbs), this is why I suggest that you feed your cat today using this beef and rice cat food recipe.

Ingredients: (for one adult cat)
- one big cup of cooked rice.
- 1/2 lbs of cooked beef meat.
- 2 spoons of oil.
- one half cup of beef sauce.

How to make it:
No witchcraft this time, just mix everything all together and serve hot or cool to your cat(s).

That's all about making cat food with beef and rice. As you may have noticed, beef and rice are a basis for many recipes, .. personnally I find it to be a very good foundation to make almost any cat recipe, you just take rice and beef (or ground meat such as chicken or turkey) and you add some fish, a little milk, or (almost) anything else!

What is the best cat beverage?

Cats are known to be not so great drinkers! Cats, in general, get most of the liquid they need from food. and if they will need to drink, then water is what to go for since it is the most adequate beverage for cats, no surprise here!

Milk is also to be classified as food, not a beverage! It contains many nutritients, such as albumen or calcium, and it is specially good for kittens. However, cow milk has a different composition than those of the mother cat's milk., it is a known fact that many cats cannot tolerate it and therefore are exposed to diahrrea (some will even vaumit it). If this happens do not give them any type of milk anymore, and even if you water it, it is useless. As a rule to be known, milk is worthless as a beverage.

Conclusion: Water, and only water for cats.

This is once again a question that keeps coming over and over, whether it is better to stick to meat and meat by products or to make homemade cat food recipes with various available cat foods.
It is somewhat frustrating to know beforehand that no good answer is available, otherwise everyone would have used it.
It is for sure more "natural" to feed raw meat and meat byproducts/leftovers to your cat, since cats have managed thousands of years now to survive by only eating meat. But this doesn't mean that eating meat is healthier than taking diversified meals! nor that it is cheaper and practical!
As a matter of fact, no known cat food recipe has ever banned meat from its ingredients! some people are scared by the idea of preparing something for their cat to eat that is not called raw meat, this conception is very false, cat food recipes are not there to substitute meats but only to complement it, you can find for example in my cat recipes limited grain additions such as brown rice, or oils, or other nutritional additives that complement the cat diet and avoids your lovely cat to get ill.
If you want a quick and easy way to go, keep giving your cat meat and meat by-products as often as you can financially afford, then pick one recipe a day from my website and see how much your cat loves it, .. I am sure you will quickely find your own way out this way, and things will be even easier when your cat will develop stronger eating habits, then you will know exactly what cat food to give it.

FISHBALLS: a cat food recipe made with fish

What better can I offer you today than a cat food recipe made with fish? this tasty recipe will make your cat go crazy! especially if the cat is not used to eat fish very often!

As a matter of fact, fish is a very nutrient cat food, and the recipes here-presented, that are made with fish are also some of the richest in protein and vitamins, .. this comes partially from the cost effectiveness criteria that I use with my recipes, so if fish is less expensive than meat (in most countries) then you are able to put a better "meat to other crap" ratio with the cat recipes made with fish than with any other type of meals.

Now let's dive into the heart of the matter, I know you can't wait, so here is it:

Ingredients:

* 3 small carrots, cooked until soft
* 16 oz canned tuna in oil, drained
* 2 tsp brewer's yeast
* 2 oz cooked herring, skin removed
* 2 T whole grain bread crumbs or oatmeal
* 2-3 T grated cheese
* 1 egg, beaten
* 2 T tomato paste (not ketchup)
* Several pinches of chopped catnip
* 2 T tomato paste (not ketchup)

How to make it:

Heat the oven to 350C. Mash up the fish with the carrots, bread crumbs or oatmeal, catnip, cheese, egg, brewer's yeast, and tomato paste to an even paste.

Mold into small balls and put on a greased baking tray.

Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, check it frequently, the fish balls should be golden brown and feel firm. Cool thoroughly.

CHICKEN AND PASTA

Ingredients:

* 1/2 Kg chicken meat or left-overs (to cut costs)
* 2-3 small carrots, cooked.
* 2-3 cups macaroni (Cooked)
* 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Preparation & Cooking

Boil the macaroni until it gets cooked. then cook up the chicken in a frying pan. Mix the chicken and the macaroni together in a food mixer. Add the oil and mix well.

PS: too much macaroni will mean too much cat crap! see previous post for details!

Cat food Vs. Cat shit

Your cat defecates too much? Many people have brought this important subject up in many places in the web, and I feel it deserves to be talked about a little, .. So how one can make homemade cat food that makes the cat produce less crap? many people have sand recipients or even gardens but if you don't have a real huge garden where the cat shit place is really far from where you live, throwing away cat defecates can be a real pain after some months (or years?).
In order for your cat to defecate less, you need to give him food that suits it the best, the more inapropriate, indigest food you give it and the more shit it will cause you to through away (or sand to bring in).
Generally speaking this means to cut grains and fiber-rich vegetables and to boost meat (and meat by-products) servings.
A good instance of this phenomenon is that when new born kittens drink exclusively mother cat milk they practically don't defecate for a few weeks (they only urinate a little), this means that the mother cat milk suits their body so much that they needn't to through away any of it, and that is what you want to be doing like.

8 Best ingredients for your cat food recipe (updated)

If you have prepared many cat food recipes from this website and wonder now what ingredients are out there that you can safely use to make up your own home made cat food recipies, then I suggest that you bookmark this list and use it alongside with your experimentation.

INGREDIENT #1 - Meat:
As you may already know, cats are carnivorous animals! that means they were made to eat MEAT as a principal source of nutrition. Meat (red and white) as well as meat byproducts (liver, kidney heart, chicken heads, ... etc) should make up to 80% of any healthy cat diet.

The second important question with meat is whether to feed your cat with raw or cooked meat, while no answer can work everywhere, and since this question has largely been subject to debate and controversy, I will give you some facts and then let you make up your mind by yourself:
- Cats have survived thousands of years only as predators, they only eat raw meat, and their digestive system adapted to this raw diet over the generations, this means cat don't need their meat to be cooked to eat it, they just need it to be fresh.
- Eating raw meat means eating it with a lot of bacteria and this can in SOME CASES lead to infections and other complications, while cats have become very resistant to major kinds of bacteria, cooking meat for them can be a safer option.

INGREDIENT #2 - Fish:
Since meat is expensive, some cheap fish varieties can be a cost cutting option! this includes sardines and a lot of other cheap fisheries that will positively complement your cat diet (without becoming the main part of it).

INGREDIENT #3 - Eggs:
Many cats don't like to eat eggs, however eggs can be a very good (and cheap) source of protein for cats, .. I suggest you try to feed your cat both raw and cooked eggs and see what works best with it, in both cases it is not recommended to feed large amounts of eggs (or at a daily basis) to you cat.

INGREDIENT #4 - Milk, Cheese and Yoghurt:
Unlike many people think, your cat doesn't need any milk at all (except if it's a kitten), so if you feed your cat with milk this can be a good thing to an extent, the previous eggs rule works here as well: "don't feed large amounts and don't feed daily"

INGREDIENT #5 - Fats and Oils:
Cats move a lot and play a lot and hence need energy, while the amount of sugars that they take is generally close to zero, fats are their main source of energy, special care needs then to be made to the amount of fats or oils that cats eat daily, the meat based meals should have enough fats in them and non meat based cat meals can be supplemented with other oils as well (see recipes), if your cat is obese some fats can be cut, but please never reduce this amount to zero or you will kill your cat.

INGREDIENT #6 - Vegetables:
Cats are not herbivorous, don't expect them to eat a lot of vegetables, the 20% of vegetables that you find in my recipes are there only to add vitamins improve taste, improve digestibility, ... etc, don't feed to much veggies.

INGREDIENT #7 - Grains:
As it has been said before, cats don't need a lot of grains, but you can add them, this will add some carbs in your cat diet (although cats cannot process carbs very efficiently), it also adds some consistent to the cat food and improves the taste a little.

INGREDIENT #8 - Water:
Water water water ... !! never forget it! water is what keeps every human or animal alive, take that away and your cat will starve in no time.

Homemade Cat Food Recipe for Cats with Kidney Disease

Directions: Cook the meets separately then cook the starch component. Grind or finely chop meat if necessary. Mix all other components with this (except the vitamin-mineral supplement). Mix and serve immediately or cover and refrigerate. Serve the vitamin-mineral supplement with the meal; give as a pill or pulverize and thoroughly mix with food before feeding.

Easy cat cookies recipe

This is an easy to make version of the cat cookies recipe, this can be a fantastic treat for a cat of any age, and you should easily get it done in less than 30 minutes, here's how you make it:

Ingredients:
7 ounces mashed sardines
1/4 cup dry non-fat milk
1/2 cup wheat germ

Directions:
Mix ingredients up. Roll into 24 small balls. Place them on greased cookie sheet. Flatten them with a fork. and bake at 350 degrees until brown.

Welcome back to this blog, I had previously talked about chicken heads, and said it was a real low cost and nutrient rich cat food alternative that you can either serve cooked or raw depending on your cat diet opinions/beliefs.

Unsurprisingly, I have received an amazing amount of positive feed back from many cat lovers around the world asking for more information. Consequently I will give you here two ways you can make quality cat meals using the chicken heads.

In many countries it's just a matter of asking the butcher to give you some heads for free or for a ridiculous fee, .. however in some other places of the world, the chickens are industrially conditioned in special places, you need then to go there and ask if you can get some kilos/pounds of heads weekly or something, and you will need to store it in the fridge.

Now that you got the chicken heads, you will need to clean them and eventually cook them before you give them to your cats, I suggest you use one of the following two methods:

Method1: Clean the heads, take away some of the fur, crack them with a hammer, and feed them RAW to your cats.

Method2: Clean the heads, cook them in boiling water for 5 minutes, then cool them, take away the gelatine/fat, take away the fur, crack them with a hammer, eventually extract the brains (cats looove chicken brains!), and serve them to your cats.

Nutritionaly speaking, chicken heads are basically just pieces of meat and bones (cats will not eat the bones and the bill), it is a very convenient food for your cat, it is just like feeding them meet, except that this is fantastically cheaper.
But don't rely on this alone! I encourage you to serve some cat recipes that are based on fish as well, and maybe other foods to improve the balance your homemade cat diet ... this blog is a perfect place to find free homemade cat food recipes anyway, just check the older posts or do a search in the box above ;)

Before you start thinking about the homemade cat diet that you want to plan for your cat, there are numerous questions that you need to ask yourself:

- How old is your cat or kitten? : a few weeks old kitten may should not get the same cat diet of an adult cat! if it is too young, you may want to make homemade cat milk substitute for her instead of a standard science diet cat food.

- Does your cat have any special food habits or dependencies?: If you own an old cat, it may certainly already have some food habits and in the extreme cases dependencies to some food in partocular, you will then have to take this data in consideration when planning your homemade cat diet.

- Does your cat have an allergy? this is a very crucial question, maybe your vet is the one who holds the answer, or you can find out in the internet sites that talk about cat allergies (I'm not a vet) and see if you should see your vet.

- Does your cat have a kidney disease? : this is a common problem too, the answer is hold by your vet, the same this goes for the last question, special cat diet is required here too.

- Is your cat obese? : this is an important question too! if your cat already has extra pounds, this might mean that you should cut some carbs and fats from its diet

1 tsp catnip
1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup powdered milk
2 tbl butter or vegetable oil
1/4 cup Soy flour
1 egg
2 tbl Wheat germ
1 tbl Unsulfured molasses
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix dry ingredients together. Add molasses, egg, oil and milk. Roll out
flat onto oiled cookie sheet and cut into small, cat bite-sized pieces.

Meat and fish: All kinds of red and white meat and fish provides protein, vitamins (only with raw serving) and fat. Liver is a good source of vitamin A (again, only raw) but should not exceede 10% of a cats diet as too much vitamin A can be dangerous for your cat.

I just don't understand why people don't feed chiken heads to their cats, if I were given a dollar evertime I tell somebody that they cat feed their cats chicken heads I'd become a rich man!
Chiken heads are a very cheap cat food substitute, depending on where you live you can get them for free or very cheap, you will only have to boil them a while, then cool them down, and break them into small pieces for your cat, he will love it.
Here in Morocco just almost everybody only feeds chicken heads to their cats + kitchen left overs, everyday and over and over, and no cats ever get ill at all, it is for sure not a so diversified diet but it may serve you as a proof that its not bad idea to do that, .. if you have questions regarding that you can post them here as a comment.

Most veterinary products are expensive, but if you look on the ingredient label you'll see that many still have corn, byproducts and such. The cause for pet allergens are the carbohydrates which serve no nutritional value for cats since they are obligate carnivores. All the pet foods sold on the common market contain byproducts, corn.

There are many higher quality cat foods on the market which you can purchase from small pet stores (not like the big pet stores such as Petsmart or Petco). Anyway, my girl is horribly allergic to nearly all commercially sold pet foods because of corn or corn meal. I tried some of the premium foods that has worked for her and since then she hasn't one allergic reaction. I know have stayed with Innova EVO. It is expensive, but of higher quality and my cat just loves it. They have turkey, chicken, lamb, venison, etc.

All the vet foods contain corn and byproducts and these are the cause for the allergens. Vets only get one semester of nutrition studies for all animals not just one particular animal so they do not have enough or adequate information on nutrition information. I don't want to diss on a vet, because I trust mine, but he was willing to admit this fact to me.

Note: you still can choose recipes from here that are low in carbs and grains in general!

2/3 cup ground chicken or hamburger
1 jar of mixed vegetables baby food
1 cat vitamin crushed (optional)
1/3 cup of plain dry bread crumbs

In a small pan over medium heat, add your meat and a little water. Poach the meat until it is medium rare. (Poach means to cook in boiling or simmering water.) Remove the pan from the heat and allow the meat to cool. Next, pour the contents of the pan into a bowl. Add in the vegetables and vitamin if you choose. Mix these ingredients in the bowl and form into marble-sized balls. Roll the balls in the bread crumbs. You may serve it immediately or store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for three days.

2 tablespoons of dried catnip
1/2 cup of yogurt
1 egg
1 tablespoon of honey
3 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mix together the two flours and the catnip. Next, stir in the yogurt, egg, honey, and vegetable oil. Roll out the catnip dough onto a floured surface. Cut the dough into small dime-sized pieces. Find tiny cookie cutters in a specialty store to make the crackers more festive. (This recipe also makes a great gift for a cat lover and his/her cat!) Place the cut dough onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Catnip crackers should be fed as a treat and not as a meal. 12 oz. boiling water
1 envelope Knox unflavored gelatin

Dissolve the gelatin in the boiling water, and add:

1 12 oz. can evaporated canned milk
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
1 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 egg yolk

Mix well in mixer. Place in covered bowl and store in refrigerator. Warm a small amount for feedings. This will keep for about 7 days.

It adds between 15-20 grams on kittens a day.
